Tuukka Susiluoto

Principal Viola

Tuukka Susiluoto studied violin at the Vantaa Music Institute. Tuukka started playing the viola in his teens and switched to the viola in full a few years later. His teachers at the Vantaa Music Institute were Sirkka Kuula-Niskanen and Seppo Rautasuo (violin) and Pekka Pulakka (viola). Susiluoto started his professional studies in viola playing at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences under the tutelage of Anna-Kreetta Gribajcevic and later Atso Lehto. At the same time, he also started his studies at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Helsinki.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in music, Susiluoto was able to continue his master’s studies at the Sibelius Academy. His teacher was Lilli Maijala. Around the same time, he graduated with a master’s degree from the University of Helsinki, majoring in comparative literature. Susiluoto’s minor subjects included the Finnish, Hindi and Nepali languages as well as education. In addition to his music studies, he worked as a Finnish teacher at a vocational school in Helsinki after graduating.

Susiluoto completed his diploma at the Sibelius Academy and graduated with a master’s degree in viola in 2015. Susiluoto attended domestic and international courses actively during his music studies, but did not actually study abroad at any stage.

Alongside his master’s studies in viola, Susiluoto held guest and temporary positions in Finnish orchestras, such as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra and the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. In the autumn of 2015, he was awarded the position of sub-principal viola in the Lapland Chamber Orchestra. Susiluoto plays a modern Italian Luca Primon viola.
